In the belly of the beautiful beast

Posted by: Kathe   in Performance, Puppet art

littlegiantess1The Little Girl Giant is a star, of course, but her elephant friend was definitely new to me.  Thanks to an alert artist and traveler – hi, Clive! – here are some ravishing pictures of large-scale puppetry, and commentary to place us, too, in that beautiful belly. (Photos courtesy Peter Wakelin.)

Clive reports that the elephant “is like something from Jules Verne, with
steam-punk mechanisms in wrought iron and an elegant spiral staircase
ascending to his back, where up to twenty people can happily stroll
around and take in the view from a balconied platform.”

“Taken as we were about to board. Note that the Elephant is still sleeping!”

“Puppeteers throw themselves like bell-ringers into the fray, raising
the Giant’s legs and making him walk. Despite the frenzied action,
called by a sort of puppet coxswain co-ordinating the animation, the
puppet moves with great grace.”

WOW!! Where is (or was) that? It’s just mindboggling. Unfortunately le site officiel de Royal de Luxe est en cours de construction:( And it’s only in French which I can read at grade 4 level. Anyway, there’s a fan site http://zonelibre44.free.fr/index.htm aussi en Français seulement and Royal de Luxe have a new production “La géante du Titanic et le scaphandrier” “The Giant of the Titanic and the Deep Sea Diver”which was performed in Nantes 5-7 June, no info about it touring. Oh well can’t afford the eurotrip anyway. Bummer.
According to the Wikipedia page they seem never to have toured North America, Chile, Iceland, Africa, Asia, and Australia though! You think they would have visited Quebec!

The photos are from that Nantes performance – apologies for being unclear! Now, how can we lure them here (or here-ish, say, NYC)?

They ARE going to New York City, this year I believe. The company don’t have a website… or none that I’ve ever been able to find… though if you surf about you can generally find what their touring programme is. You have to work at it a bit. (They don’t take the publicity-heavy Cirque du Soleil route. R de L seem to revel in their ‘street theatre’ status, and they clearly enjoy springing surprises.) At Nantes there was no printed programme of events available. (When we asked the people at the tourist office for one, they smiled, shrugged their shoulders and replied with Gallic insouciance “This is not the way of Royal de Luxe.”) For three days you just had to get out in the streets and follow the music. It makes the experience very exciting. And between times, we visited their workshops, had lunch in the cafe there and rode the elephant! So get working to find out where you can see them. Meanwhile, this is a good site for images:

Thanks for the clarification, Clive, and the Flickr link. “Get out in the streets and follow the music” is excellent daily advice as well….
